Four Ways to Drink More Water & Stay Healthy

Considering nearly 60% of your body is water, staying hydrated is a no-brainer. In fact water is essential to the normal functioning of all parts of your body. Water is in charge of regulating your body temperature, lubricating your joints, moistening soft tissues and carrying nutrients and oxygen to your cells (among other things). Simply put, the importance of water can’t be ignored. Of course, that’s easier said than done. You need to drink more water.

The truth is, nearly 50% of adults in America aren’t drinking enough water. People are drinking plenty of fluids, just not enough water. Here are a few tips to improve your total water consumption each day.

Drink More Water

  1. Use technology to help you

One of the difficulties associated with drinking water is simply remembering to drink more water. Consider using an app to keep track of your daily water consumption and to remind yourself to drink more water. With enough practice, you can establish good water drinking habits.

And if you don’t want to download an app, you can always set personal calendar reminders or alarms to help you regularly supplement your water consumption.

  1. Spruce up the water drinking experience

Not everyone is a fan of the “flavorless” taste of water. The answer? Don’t drink plain water. No, this doesn’t mean you should turn your water into some sugary, mystery concoction, but rather that you add some natural flavor to make your water taste better.

You can start by simply adding a slice of fruit to your water bottle or by freezing some fruit slices into ice cubes. If you’re still struggling to enjoy a glass of water, you could try adding ginger and herbs to spice things up. Finally, try switching to sparkling water to really add some kick to the water drinking experience.

  1. Eat some water

Technically, biting water won’t do you any good, but choosing food that has high concentrations of water can. Certain fruits, like cucumber, zucchini or watermelon, for example, are made up of over 90% water. While these foods won’t completely replace your need to actually drink water, adding them liberally to your meals can go a long way to keep you hydrated.

  1. Always carry and refill a water bottle

If there is water located consistently and conveniently in front of you, you’re much more likely to drink it. Always carry a water bottle with you and fill it up as soon as it is empty. This simple trick alone will constantly remind you that you need to drink more water and provide an easy avenue for you to do so at the same time.

While improving your water drinking habits won’t solve all of your health issues, it will prevent many problems from happening in the first place. On top of that, drinking appropriate amounts of water will help you feel and look better. The amount you should drink will vary based on your current health condition (though, at least four large glasses each day is a good starting point), so consult your doctor for more information on what’s right for you.

Preventative care is also an annual doctor exam. If you currently don’t have health insurance, Nevada Health Link is here to help. In other words, certain life events or situations, such as job loss, income change, marriage/divorce or birth/adoption of a child, may allow you to enroll in an insurance plan through Nevada Health Link outside of the annual open enrollment period.

All of our health plans exist to reduce the costs of health insurance and make sure you are covered. We’re always to help, so don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance.
