Shopping for health insurance can feel overwhelming. There are a lot of options out there, and you may face the decision between a Qualified Health Plan (QHP) and a Short-Term Limited Duration (STLD) Plan. Learn more about your options before you decide to buy.

Short-Term Limited Duration Plans

Short-Term Health Insurance covers accidents and illnesses for a defined period, with a lower monthly premium than other types of plans, but with far less coverage. There are no Open Enrollment restrictions, so you can apply for one of these plans at any time of the year, often with coverage starting within 24 hours. But what risks to your health are you taking?

Short-Term plans fall short for people with certain chronic conditions, complex medical needs and poor health. Also, people who have had a significant health event or medical condition within the past five years may have a harder time getting accepted for a Short-Term Plan because of a pre-existing condition. Benefits are not standardized and may only cover accidents and illnesses, but not events like mental health, maternity care and prescriptions. Short-Term plans undermine high-quality, comprehensive insurance for adults, children and people with pre-existing conditions. These plans may drop consumers from their coverage if they become diagnosed with a medical condition after enrolling.

Qualified Health Plans

Unlike short term plans, a Qualified Health Plan through Nevada Health Link includes the following significant benefits:

  • Maternity health care
  • Prescription drug coverage
  • Mental health care
  • Substance use disorder services
  • Preventative care – annual exams, check-ups, cancer screenings
  • Treatment for developmental delays

All qualified health plans through Nevada Health Link provide access to comprehensive coverage, including the 10 Essential Health Benefits. Every one of our health plans are certified by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and follow established limits on cost-sharing reductions such as deductibles and copayments. Applicants will not be denied coverage due to a pre-existing condition.

You never know when an emergency medical event could happen. Don’t take risks with your health on a Short-Term Plan. Get true peace of mind with a plan through Nevada Health Link.
