Quarantine: Your New Exercise Routine

Live
Aug 28, 2020
Remember when you made that New Year’s resolution to go to the gym every day? And then when you re-committed to getting (or staying) in shape after you began quarantine? You may or may not have kept that commitment, or maybe you’re only just now realizing how much you miss that daily walk around the office. Whatever your situation, exercising is always a good idea. Not only does it provide countless physical benefits, including weight loss and reducing your risk of developing various health conditions, it also boosts your mental health. It’s an exceptional stress reliever and can often reduce the effects of depression.

So, if you’ve been feeling a bit cooped up lately (along with the rest of Nevada), find a way that works best for you to incorporate exercise into your daily routine.

How to have an exercise routine in the times of COVID-19? We have some tips:

1. Search for online videos. The gym might not be an option for you right now, but many personal trainers have made their fitness programs available online. YouTube, PE Universe and other streaming services are a great resource. Whether you’re more comfortable with a Zumba class or yoga, there’s a workout for everyone.

2. Use your bodyweight. You don’t have to rely on equipment to stay fit. Luckily, fitness instructors are aware of the fact that many people don’t have access to gyms, weights, etc. Workouts that don’t require equipment are plentiful, just take a look online! Looking for something quick? Pushups, sit-ups, squats, lunges and more are all great strength-training exercises.

3. Find time when you can. COVID-19 has impacted everyone’s lives, and our schedules are no exception. Finding a routine might be difficult, so try to fit in exercise whenever you have some down time. This could be as simple as a ten-minute walk, jumping jacks during commercial breaks or sit-ups before hopping into bed.

4. Think creatively. Did you know that a man in France ran an entire marathon (26 miles) on his 23-foot-long balcony? You might not have a balcony, but creativity doesn’t stop with just one person! Try running around your home, dancing while you do your household chores, squatting with a sack of flour (or your child) or doing 10 pushups every time someone says “coronavirus.” Just think outside the box and add something new to your schedule!

Exercising during these times can seem daunting and anything but worthwhile. COVID-19 has thrown the entire world into a mad-dash for answers. Nevada Health Link is the qualified resource for all Nevadans.
