STD STI Awareness Month

Studies show that more than 2 million sexually transmitted disease (STD) cases were reported nationwide in 2017, including 19,500 in Nevada alone. With April being STD/STI awareness month, we want to educate Nevadans about the importance of scheduling regular STD screenings. Though STDs affect individuals of all ages, they take a particularly heavy toll on the younger population. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that those who are in the 15-24 age range make up just over one-quarter of the sexually active population, but account for half of the new sexually transmitted infections that occur in the United States each year.

What’s the difference between an STD and an STI?

A Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) means that someone might be infected but may not have had the infection show symptoms or turn into a disease. While all STDs are preceded by STIs, not all STIs result in the development of STDs. A list of the more commonly known STDs are:

What are the steps to prevent and treat an STD?

Talk About It

If you and your partner are getting ready to take your relationship to the next level, it’s important to talk about your sexual health and history.

Get Tested

A common misconception about STDs is that if you have one you would know; however, many STDs don’t come with any signs or symptoms. If you are sexually active with someone new, plan to meet with your doctor or other providers in your Qualified Health Plan’s network.

Get Treated

If you do have an STD, work with your provider or doctor to get the right medicine or treatment. If left untreated, an STD can cause an increased risk of giving or getting HIV, long-term pelvic and abdominal pain and a decreased ability to become pregnant or have pregnancy complications.

Through your Nevada health insurance with us, preventative screenings are covered under your 10 Essential Health Benefits. Take the time this month to schedule an appointment and meet with your doctor for a screening. Continue to spread awareness about STDs by encouraging your loved ones to do the same.

If you’re not currently enrolled in health insurance, certain qualifying life events (QLE) may make you eligible for a special enrollment period. QLE’s are life-changing events such as job loss, income change, marriage/divorce and birth/adoption of a child to name a few. To learn more or receive answers to additional questions that you may have, email the Nevada Health Link staff at customerserviceNVHL@exchange.nv.gov.
